Where did Roman shades originate?

Did you know …

In Rome between 70 and 80 A.D., Roman Shades originated as awnings.

They were first used to shade spectators in upper level seating at the Colosseum. Although these were hung horizontally from the wall, the design essentially became the modern roman shade.

Also widely used externally as a very effective patio or pergola shading, the design was adapted to the recognizable vertical version hanging at windows.
Both versions retract neatly into folds when not in use. A feat of engineering back in Roman times, and a stylish solution to an age old shading issue.

There are many modern variations of roman shades; from sheer fabrics, light filtering options and room darkening, to a dual shade combining fabrics for a layered effect and added privacy or sun control.

We’ll explain the different styles so you can decide what works for your windows to add chic style and elegance.
