Shady History
Did you know …

In Rome between 70 and 80 A.D., Roman Shades originated as awnings.

They were first used to shade spectators in upper level seating at the Colosseum. Although these were hung horizontally from the wall, the design essentially became the modern roman shade.
Also widely used externally as a very effective patio or pergola shading, the design was adapted to the recognizable vertical version hanging at windows.
Both versions retract neatly into folds when not in use. A feat of engineering back in Roman times, and a stylish solution to an age old shading issue.
There are many modern variations of roman shades; from sheer fabrics, light filtering options and room darkening, to a dual shade combining fabrics for a layered effect and added privacy or sun control.

We’ll explain the different styles so you can decide what works for your windows to add chic style and elegance.

This nursery features classic, or flat style roman shades in light filtering shade fabric giving gentle filtered light. Combined with cordless controls for child safety, this provides a clean and tailored look which lasts as children grow.
This example of a hobbled style roman shade clearly shows the full, rounded folds which stay in place even when lowered. It gives a rich look and brings style to otherwise ordinary windows.
This also shows the clean lines of waterfall style which hangs from the front of the headrail thus needing no valance.
These relaxed fabric roman shades unify this wall of windows and offer a casual elegance to this otherwise formal space. This is another example of classic or flat romans in a timeless neutral fabric.
Roman shades can be customized to suit any style and budget and really add custom details to match your décor. This fabric classic roman shade features trim for extra contrast and high end detail.

Trim can be inset as shown, edge banded and added to the valance edges.

A little Homework game
Roman Shades are everywhere! Especially on TV, so play a little game at home. Next time you’re watching your favorite show with a window in the backdrop, check out the covering. Seriously, we think you’ll be surprised.
